I HAVE to Make this Change!

As the new year approaches, we often think of things we would “like” to change in our lives.   Perhaps we ponder things we “need” to change.  We may even consider matters that we “want” to change.  It occurred to me recently that such choice of language subtly lets us of the hook.   I do believe there is another word that must be employed in reference to the resolve to make life changes!

The phrase “have to” is fitting and appropriate.  I “have to” make this particular change this year. I have no choice. I cannot wait any longer.  That has a real legalistic and harsh ring to it, does it not?  Let’s be kind to ourselves.  “I have to get on track this year in making a particular change.”  Expecting perfection is not very realistic.  And it’s also a setup to discouragement.   But nevertheless, “I have to get started on the journey…”

What do you “have to do” this year?   The Scripture uses the term “resolve.”  That word has similar force behind it!   What will you “resolve” to do this year?

Psalm 17:3 provides an excellent example of someone that feels he “has” to make a commitment.  He is “resolved…”   “Though you probe my heart and examine me at night, though you test me, you will find nothing; I have resolved that my mouth will not sin.” -Psalm 17:3
